to check if my car is pinging i generally put my car in 5th gear at about 25-30mph and get on it a bit, if its pinging you will hear it then under a load like that, im not sure the right way but thats how i do it

your car may not ping at all.. A few guys on here have their timing advnaced fully and don't have any problems with it.
