Default High Mileage

What does everybody think about buying a 99+ Mustang GT with high mileage? By "high mileage" I mean 80,000 - 100,000 miles. How well do these Mustangs last when they have high miles? What problems should you look out for?

Well it makes a big difference if those miles are mostly city or highway, or 1/4-mile-at-a-time on a dragstrip

If it's been maintained really well & the price is right, I'd consider it

See if you can get the owner to talk about racing the car or maintenance. If they can talk with some intelligence about how the car was maintained and show receipts as proof the car might be OK.
Get a Carfax,it's worth the subscription price if it keeps you from buying a POS that's been through the mill.
The mileage range you are looking at isn't that high unless the car was owned by someone who "Drove it like they stole it".

I traded my 00GT in with 66000 miles, it was immaculate, but the trans was shot(popping out of 3rd gear), both torque boxes were ripped, and the rear main seal was leaking.... Just remember, looks can be decieving...

i think everything with a high mileage car depends on how it was maintained and treated,,
and 90% of that is a shot in the dark

very few people who beat the **** out of a car are going to tell you that when they try and sell it

mileage is my #1 prospect when i was looking for a car,,,,,,,,i dont have much room to speak on looking for cars, as i bought the 2nd one i looked at (first 99-04gt in 2004) but it only had 48K on a '99 and i got a hell of a price

in your situation, it all depnds on how much money you have saved up, what youre willing to spend up front on the car, and IF YOU HAVE PATIENCE

i myself would not buy a 99-04 GT with more than 60K miles (even though mine has 59 now and is in great shape cosmetically and mechanically) there is just too much gray area and that would make me feel uncomfortable

if you look around you can find 99-01's with 50K miles or less for usually now in the 12's, (though they shoudl be cheaper)

if youre patient, and not in a bind for money, look really carefully and find a 99-01 in the 30K-40K range in the 11,000

they are out there, youve just got to find them
good luck man!

Thanks for all of the input, the money isn't too big of an issue... I can afford a car in the $12,000 to $13,000 range but I have found quite a few cars with between 70k and 90k miles and those prices range from $8,500 to $10,500 and that just seems more realistic to me, I would rather pay a lot less, but I was unsure about the mileage situation.

ask him howfast it will run a 1/4 in. if he tells you a time, don't buy it. there are a bazillion 99-04 GT's on the market, so don't be in a rush to get the first one you find.

I was in your same situation about 8 months ago. I was looking for a 99-04 GT that wasn't beat to death. After about a month of searching I came upon one that was for sale close by. It had 70k miles on it but the guy totally rebuilt the engine. He had the car since 2001 (checked on carfax) and had only put 2k miles on it. The guy that had it before him put a lot of highway miles on it which isnt bad. So basically I got a car with a brand new engine.

It also depends on the area where the car was driven.

The Carfax will give you an accurate record of when/where the car was registered. It’s not a perfect system, but its better than nothing.

For example a NY car with average-mileage which has been driven in constant gridlock not to mention cold weather might be in worse shape mechanically than a high-mileage Arizona car.
