Metallic Noise

Metallic Noise
Hello,
I have a '96 Mustang GT Conv. w/AT. Was running just great after new plugs/wires. Drove it on an 50 mile round trip, then went out a few hours later and it started making a loud, metallic noise that increases with engine RPM. I cannot isolate where it is, but it is not the water pump, as I removed the belt and the noise persisted. The noise does not go away with engine warm-up. It does seem louder at the front and underneath near the transmission, but that could be reflection. I've listened to various locations with a hose and cannot hear it on the inside. Could it have lost a piston pin?

RE: Metallic Noise
Thanks for replying. Yes, oil level is good, though I cannot be sure of the pressure other than what the instrument panel shows. The engine has about 127k on the clock. It is definitely a tapping sound. This started suddenly. I had put in a new radiator a couple of weeks back, so I spent quite a bit of time with the hood open and the engine running. Nothing else strange, no overheating. I am stumped!

RE: Metallic Noise
Okay, I will be perfectly honest with you, I don't know much about the mechanics of cars. However, just recently my F150 started making a *pinging* noise (it sounded like something hitting on hollow metal) that increased as the RMP's climbed just as yours is doing. A week later the transmission went out[&:] This same exact thing happened to our Ford Explorer a year earlier. Like I said, I don't really know much about the innards of cars, but if its a hollow metal pinging sound BEWARE!

Wow! Thanks for that info. Did yours happen suddenly, or did it come on slow? It does sound pretty loud down by the trans, and I thought it was just noise reflection. Anyway, I am taking off the timing cover looking for broken bits, but will definitely keep that in mind.
