search on the shock and strut maufacturer pages (kyb, tokico, monroe), they'll give you a list of things to look for, but I don't think you can actually see anything to determine if anything is wrong.
Whats a good way to tell if you need shocks/struts on a car?

Pick a corner of the car and bounce on that corner, when you stop bouncing on that corner the car should bounce no more than 1 1/2 times. Any more than that, the shock or strut is worn and needs to be replaced.
Good rule of thumb though is like red said, 50K (I prefer 50-60K)
