Default Tremec 3650 HELP??????????????????????

Ok guys,

I have an 01 GT 5 speed with 32,000 miles. I have the 3650 trans. 2nd and 3rd feel a little notchy but not too bad compared to other cars that I have had. But then again compared to some of the discriptions that you guys have mine could be smooth as silk. It does not grind and it is my daily driver and I do not race it.

Is my trans ok if it's not grinding by now? And if its ok could I have a problem down the road. It's a mustang not a 150,000 sports car. You can't expect perfection on a production car like that.

I have made an appt with the dealer to look at it. There is a TSB out now to replace 2nd gear the blocking rings and syncro assembly but the dealer isn't aware of it. I don't want them tearing it apart if I am over reacting. You guys know, if you don't get the right mechanic the first time then you have trouble forever.

In all that I have been reading changing the fluid to 3.5 quarts is recommended. And it looks like the fluid of choice is GM syncromesh or Havoline Dextron III (non synthetic). I want to install my new Pro 5.0 and change the fluid at the same time. But worry if I change the shifter they will void the warranty or won't fix the TSB.

Is this all in my head and am I over reacting because of all the big problems some of you guys have?

Do I change the fluid and install my shifter anyway?

If the transmission is ok now, will it or could it get worse?

Thanks for all of your help.

if it was me, ide put a good synthetic in it like amsoil, regardless of what they say, to see how it reacts...amsoil smoothes shifts and prevents grinding sounds...i put it in my t45 when i had it, it never grinded into reverse with amsoi

I wouldn't sweat the notchy shifts. Thats pretty much just a how a Mustang trans is. If you can hammer second and third and it doesn't pop out of gear, then I wouldn't worry about it. When it does that, the syncros are shot.

I agree; I have an ungodly 50k on my TR3650. It has always been notchy; that's just how it is. I do have the 1-2 grind, but usually I just baby it until the car warms up and it goes away. If it dies, I'll get a T56 or one of the new 500-600lb/ft Tremec TKO's to replace it. But I wouldn't worry about it; it's probably fine. As far as the shifter though, just wait the 4k miles until your warranty expires. But you want to go ahead and get any problems or worries on record with Ford before the warranty expires. That way even if a problem persists past 36k miles, they'll be stuck fixing it if they did not fix it right the first time.

I do the same skip 2nd until the tranny is warm. You wil probably void the warrenty if you put in the short throw because you are altering the very component you what to have fixed. If you aren't worried about the TSB, which is probably never going to come and by that time you will be out of it anyways (36,000miles) is standard and it may only cover late 02's to early 04's, don't do it but you may be waiting for nothing.

Default trans replacement

I've been told that I need to initiate my bellhousing on my 3650 tremec if I change trans that is to dial indicate the bell opening and if it varies more than .5 inch ,it needs to be shimmed. is this that important or can I just bolt the replacement unit in? any help, please

you never have to shim a bellhousing, they are built to line up from the start. somebody is filling your head with garbage.

dhood, you're really over-reacting....and forget syn oil or other magic potions in the tranny...stick with the replacement for the original mercon fluid, which is Mercon V.
These are just Fords, not Beemers,etc..Not in the same category as far as shifting smoothness, etc.and ps,most of us get high miles out of them regardless, unless thrashed.(my babied 04 has 81k-all is good, and it's had a little 1-2 snick from day #1)Fomoco isn't going to do a cartwheel for a 15 year old car either..
