Default adjusting air/fuel ratio

well my car is running too rich and backfiring like crazy, and md isnt getting back to me anytime soon. i was wondering how safe it would be for me to drop the air/fuel ratio and make it leaner through extreme tune. ive tried it already and it made no major difference, would setting it down like 10 points be too much? just wonder, i doubt i can screw the car up any worse than it is now.
