Default What limits revs?

Ive seen tuners and one of the thing they talk about is raising the rev limiter...so i have 2 questions

1)What rpms do most people change the rev limiter to on their stock motor?
2)What engine component is actually limiting the engine from spinning so fast? valves? springs? pistons?

1) mine is at 7000. Depending on your setup you can change it to whatever you want. If your fairly stock or just have some bold ons your power isnt passed about 6000. You could shift at 5800 and set the rev limited to 6500

I don't know much about the bottom end, but I do know the valve train does limit the RPMS you can safely run the engine at. I believe the modular engines are interference engines... don't quote me on it I may be wrong?

If the RPMs get too high the valves start to float and possibly bamo... so that's why when you get bigger cams that extend the power band, you need stronger springs to prevent the valves from floating.

I set my max RPM at drive to 6050, and my first gear to 5700 (allow for overage without hitting my rev limiter)

I was told by a mechanic the other day that that a 5.0 motor will automatically shut down if it is reved up to high. Is this correct. my rpm's jumped to 6.9 7 thousand during my learning proccess doing breakstands thats why I braught it up with the mechanic. Is this a known fact?

from what i understand the modular engines are a whole lot better to rev than the old 5.0's, but either wy you probally shouldnt get that high in the revs,....but dont hold that to me, as im pretty sure about this

Yeah it was entirely an accident I usually don't go higher than 5500. When I moved my left foot off the clutch and on the break I lost focus and it jumped up really quick. I should have asked for advice before I tried for I got some advice later that night and everything was cool after that..

If your engine is stock to mildly modded, revving it higher will not get you any more hp. If have switched out the cams then yes, it needs to be revved a little higher to take full advantage of the cams.

Our engines bottom end was not made to rev really high and you can damage it by over-revving it. If you want to rev high, get yourself a nice forged rotating assembly with some nice cams and valvesprings, then get a tune.
