Default Radiator fan

Does anyone know exactly what kicks the radiator fan on. Mine got a little toasty today and realized that the fan wasn't kicking on... was wondering if there was a radiator fan relay or if it works off of the coolant temperature sensor... cuz i know the guage runs off of the temp sender and that won't control the fans... if anyone has any idea i'd appreciate it....

Didn't get too hot... it was leaning on L in normal... and thanks for the compliment.... don't guess its too bad for a ten year old car... so you think it is run off of the coolant sensor?
