Default Clutch Warranty replacement Story

I bring my car to the ford dealership down the road and the techs took 2 days to look at it. The guy was a cool guy and they were putting the car on the lift. He saw all the mods and was like wow, very nice. He was on his way to put it on the lift and the old head thech guy was searching the car. This guy just wasnt the head of the dealership he was the main ford representative. They called him down to look at the car. Everything was flawless, I was about to get my new clutch replaced. Then all of a sudden the head guy finds my Moroso Motorsports Timeslip in the back. Im like oh..hell..no.. WTF!!!! The guy is like we cant replace this under warranty because they way this car has been driven. Its going to cost 1500 to replace the clutch...

The cool guy was like sorry bro, I was a kid once and I wish I could do something to help. He said he can help me take it to another dealership and try to get is fixed over there. He also said he would let me substitute the stock clutch with an aftermarket clutch if I go through with the install. I still cant believe I LEFT A LITTLE PIECE OF PAPER IN THE TRUNK AND THEY FOUND IT!!!

anyways, they said I would need the headers removed to install the clutch. They said it would be 1500 to replace the clutch. Then they said If I didnt have the headers on it would be 700 to replace the clutch. I dont believe they need to remove the headers..

How could it be so much to replace the clutch? What else could have possibly broke when the clutch blew out?

i am very surprised that they even wanted to warranty it cuz that is known as a wear product just like brakes. and their is no way it cost 1500 dolla to put a clutch in. i did mine of jack stands and it took 10hours but still. and anyone with a lil' mechanics knowledge can do it. as long as they have patients with the top two bellhousing bolts.

bad luck...

I'm kind of surprized the'll replace a clutch under warranty anyway.... (like nailman said)

And yeah, take it to another dealer.

BUT...

Why are these guys going through your paperwork anyway? In your trunk no less?

Its a mustang right? Not a Pontiac Fiero... so the clutch is not in the trunk

they say they check the trunk for nitrous when cars like these come in for warranty work. At least they were nice enough to even think about working on it. Normally clutch isnt covered after a certain amount of miles (a few thousand) but they said my mustang was in such great of condition.

im still trying to figure out why it would cost 1500. There must be something else damaged, but what?

$1500 because it's a dealership and they are charging over $90 an hour.

Your headers are in the way of the clutch, they have to be loosened and moved out of the way.

It's not 'odd' to get a new clutch under warranty, typically you have 12,000 miles for a warranty on your clutch. They can claim it was a TOB issue, which led to a prematurely worn clutch.....

Not to worry yet...

Dealer costs are inflated over a normal shop.

Obviously, if its on your own dime, you don't want the dealer to touch your car...

They did not give you a paper estimate? I'd take it somewhere else.

steeda wanted 500 and my friend with an 04 cobra is getting his clutch done for 200 labor. He said I could get the same price. Is the cobra the same amount of hours labor as the gt?

There are pro's and con's to taking it to a dealership.. The bad being, they're usually very busy, and Parts are Retail + 20%, on top of what Dan had mentioned, over $90 an hour for labor..

The good is: Lots and Lots of Liability. If they do the work, they have to warranty the work, nuff said. Plus, I'd normally want OEM parts, to replace OEM Parts, unless I'm upgrading, then it's a mute point... Plus you KNOW that the guys working on your car, have the know-how, common sense, and tools to do it right. As opposed to some of the local "mechanics," who do odds and ends.

I rather do the work myself... If it came down to a pretty nasty job though, I'd say I'd probably bring it to the dealer...

There are some upsides, like you said, they warranty the work, but a lot of those mechanics are toothless retards who don't have any more experience than a Jiffy Lube oil changer.

I'd never pay dealership rates, ever.
