Why not just disconnect the intake, and pull it off from the engine bay?

No that way is pretty simple, I clean it out roughly every 9 thousnad miles, but I'm lazy. Truthfully it doesn't appear to be that dirty when I clean it though so I think it's fine, 6k if you want to be ****.

i just crawl under the passenger side with a tiny flathead, unscrew the clamp and wiggle it out. it's a PITA to get it back in though. you might have unbolt the plastic piece there to get clearance.

I just took the bottom half of the cold air intake off and then let the filter drop out ...then after cleaning it, put it all back together

Just pull the filter out from under the car. You don't really need the K&N filter kit. Just clean it with some soap and water and set it out in the sun to dry for a while. When its good and dry, spray it with some Pam or some other kind of cooking oil. I do it about every 3 or 4 months and it seems to work perfectly fine.
