Not to jackthe thread but after I get the beast polished and buffed I have to buy tires,Michelin Z rated 245/45R17's for the front and 275/70R17's for 420 Mounted and balanced. Anyways after thats all said and done I am getting gears, where can I buy motives? Do they make 3:90's?

RE: Sorry I never believed you guys!!!!!!
What's the gearing in 5th with that '96? I have a '99 automatic and I believe in OD it is .70:1 so it is only 70% of the rear gears so 4.10's are like 2.87's on OD. I calculate 75mph will be 2800rpm's and quite acceptable. 3.73's would be like 2.53's and at 66MPH they would turn the motor at 2280rpm's compared to the 4.10's 2500rpm's. The stock 3.27's turn the motor at 2000rpm's at 66 mph for comparison. A lot depends on how far you intend to drive the car and at what speeds. A 1000 mile interstate drive at 75mph might make 4.10's a bit much but some can tolerate more revs than others. My car would cruise at almost 100mph in OD with the stock gearing if it would wind that high in OD! It doesn't pull much in 3rd with the 3.27's and the stock HP to the wheels. mark

Didn't need to revive this thread... As a testament AGAINST 4.10's... look at Mt Twigbert... He got the 4.10s and he runs out 4th at about 112 MPH. He's getting a blower soon now, meaning he will be able to trap 112+ MPH in the 1/4 mile EASY (99/01 Cobra). In that case, 4.10s were a bad idea.
4.10 IS NOT ALWAYS THE ANSWER.
90% of the roads around here have a speed limit of 55... a few are 50, and even fewer are 45 or below. With the 4.10s I'd be turning 2000-2100 RPM with normal driving, right in the range for amazing drone from the Flowmasters... not only that, I'd be getting considerably worse gas mileage. I currently turn ~1400 RPM when cruising at the speed limit in the area, saving a considerable amount of gas and equating to a quiet ride when I want it. The extra time at the track and the extra fun in the three gear blasts doesn't justify the disadvantages for me. If I get gears at all at this point, it'll be 3.73's, but because the stang is my daily driver, and because of the average speed limits of the area, I will probably not. Just giving some things for other people to consider before you just spout out 4.10.
