Default advice please, think i posted in the wrong group, sorry

want to get a convertible gt, i test drove a stick shift 06 yesterday.
It was amazing!! but after looking at finances its just not gonna be possible.
im gonna have to get an older model. What are the pros + cons of
the 96-98 and 99-04 models?
how do they perform? are the gt engines the same for both models?
thanks for any advice.

The 96-98 do not have the "improved performance" (PI) heads. 99-04 do. Substantial increase in horsepower between the two.

Go for the 99-04 if you can afford it. They have the pi(performance improved) heads, cams and intake in them. A 99-00 with decent mileage could be had at around 8k.
