real quick just what in the hell do those mils do??? I know they turn off the check engine light, but do they actually affect the performance of your car, smoothness, reliability, etc... from what ive read they seem like a waste that doesnt work half the time???[sm=bangbang.gif]
if the check engine light comes on the car is supposed to go into "limp mode" and pull timing, but I have never had it happen in person.

The best way to do it is to turn off the sensors with a tuner of some sort.

Hey DJ...
I pretty much agree about the passing emmissions thing, but...!
I had a blown Miata with a test pipe in place of the cat. Passed with flying colors. That is why I was so pissed that the cats are mandatory. I believe that if you can pass "X" level, it shouldn't matter what combo you have (ie a 5.0 in a MX-5, no cat, or whatever).

he was saying he passed emissions in his Monster Miata without cats... so if that's the case, it doesn't sound like cats are that essential for him does it?

Well, Mark, maybe you can help me understand where DJ is goin?!
1985??? Making **** up??? Cats not essential???
WTF over?!
DJ, I was just pointing out that you can 'pass' emmissions w/out a cat. Yes, you must still physically have a cat on to pass, but it is just as possible to pass the CO levels w/out.
BTW, twas not a Monster Miata, as the post says, it was a 'blown' 4 banger with a roots style Sebring 300 cfm supercharger - without cats!
And, yes they did use a pole and mirror getup to look under the car, but either they thought the test pipe was a cat, or they were just not paying attention.
Still not sure the 1985 reference is, but this took place in Portland, Oregon in 1996.
The moral of the story is, as you so eloquently put it DJ, cats are not that essential to me.
Sorry to ruffle your feathers DJ.

yeah, i also did some google on them. they trick the computer to think that you still have cats on otherwise your check engine light turns on and the computer adjust fuel/timing and all that stuff to compesate for no cats but that actually kills your hp/torque. i can confirm this, cause i took all 4 cats from my mustang 95 v6. ****, it sounds much better but it will take much higher RPMs just to move. i wouldnt never understood why until i read some posts here. now i plan to take the cats out from my stang 96 v8..however i will get some MILs handle before doing so..since a tuner is too expensive for me (still in college and working part-time lol ) and i dont know anybody with a tuner [:'(]

you won't pass emmisions at all without cats

i just passed emitions and i dont have cats.... every car under 95 has to get that stupid hose in the exhaust to measure emitions but the rest like my 2k gt get the emitions machine conected to car computer, pretty much it pulls out the codes (if any) like they do in auto zone or o'reillys, since the MIL eliminators are pretty much telling the computer that my car has catalityc converters, i didnt have any problem at all
