I'm considering getting either 3.73s or 4.10s for my auto 03 GT and I just used the calculator.... RPMs at 80mph in 4th gear for 3.73s is 2,651, RPMs for 4.10s is 2,914! 2900 is my RPMs right now with the stock 3.27 at 100mph! I don't do much freeway driving but I'm thinking maybe I'll go with the 3.73s. The increase from 3.27 to 4.10 cruising at 80 is 600 RPM's, that's huge! Am I just over-reacting? Somebody tell me the calculator is wrong!?

4.10's!!!!!! Only if you do mainly city driving or have a 6-speed. If youre content with going 70 mph @ 3k rpm then go for it. Bye bye gas mileage, not to mention the additional wear and tear on your drivetrain components. I ran a 3.08 gear in my old 85 GT ( I prefer top speed over acceleration), it spun 1800rpm @ 85 mph. Hell I didnt shift out of 4th till about 120(if not faster), I swapped out the 3.08 for a 2.73 so I could go even faster, mind you I still ran mid 13's with the 2.73. Also, when calculating your rpms with a specific gear remember to take tire diameter into your calculations. Id say especially if you drive on the highway A LOT, Id recommend a lower gear than either of those 3.55 or 3.73. Or better yet save your money and buy something more worthwhile like a set of awesome heads, intake, exhaust..... just my .02 cents. But if those are your only 2 options go with the 3.90.

Well i just realized that Im only going to be doing a lot of highway driving for about one more month, then i graduate high school. So I dont need to be consered with excessive highway driving nearly every day. I think Im going togo wiht the 4.10s. Now i just need to scrounge up some cash between car payments.

no the calculator is right, sure the 4.10s r fun but they do have their draw backs, yea yea people says u only lose 2 mpg, but still thats an extra 30 miles per tank, also theres the whole factor of the higher gears wearing down your car faster[:'(] personally i like my 3.55s jus fine and if you want off the line a lil better i think 3.73s r a nice enough upgrade over stock without as many draw backs as the 4.10

hahahahaha good point! lol

as for the question, dont fear the gear

get the 4.10s and when you need to replace the tires get sum sticky ones, a good set of DRs
will give you the slight loss in traction back and then some, and you will have MUCH more pop
off the line

I have posted on these threads a lot because I have 3.90's in my 2004, and my stepbrother has 4.10's in his 2003. I will say that, I have more pull in higher gears then him... You CAN tell the differance... minute but there is a differance... I do still have a harder pull in the higher gears (like middle to top of 4th)... I will also say, that i have a decision to make. If I end up going forced induction, then im keeping these gears.. if i plan to go n/a i am swapping them for 4.30's. I happen to be very happy I went with 3.90's, not much of a differance, but big enough to notice and it ends up being very noticable (so, i've heard) if you go FI, or nitrous, etc.
