A guy at work told me that the 5W-20 Ford recommends to use to way too thin and not good for long term reliability. He said they only recommend that to get better fuel economy out of the car. Would it be better to use 5W-20 or 5W-30? What weight does everyone else here use?

I don't care what Ford says...5w-20 is too thin of an oil. If you are in the cold in might be okay, but if you are in the summer and pound the crap out of your pedal racing those rpm's and increasing the heat in the engine, I would put 10w-30 in. But never less than 5w-30.
The higher the #'s, the thicker the oil. When your engine gets hot the oil thins right out. That's when damage occurs. They say use 5w-20 because it's an Overhead cam motor, and it's easier for the oil to get to the top. I would use either 5w-30 or 10w30 synthetic. Synthetic oil is thinner than conventional, which dissapates heat a little easier, and gets to the top of the motor relatively easy.
I use 10w-30 Mobil 1 Extended performance w/Pure One filter. in my 1997 GT. Change every 2500 miles. I like to romp on it. $45 is small price to pay for an oil change versus a motor.

It's hot here a sizling 64 today but monday its gong to be real bad at 85. Ok Ok I know what your thinking but 80 here is like 110 in Bullhead AZ. When we hit 100 which is only like 1 or 2 weeks out of the year people are almost dead. It's a diffrent heat here in oregon. In the winter I run 5W/20 so at 5 degrees it runs as a 20 weight oil but when I lived in LA it was 10W/30

it's supposed to be thin. the modular motors have smaller clearances than most motors on the market, and therefore need the lightweight oils or they will not lubricate properly. you think ford has some sort of special incentives or secret agenda to push the 5w-20 oil on their consumers?

would you say running 10w-30 in the desert heat is bad or good?

why do you think 5w-20 is not the best one?

I'm sure ford tested these mod motors pretty well, the entire company's welfare was banking on these motors a few years ago.
