its for better mileage because it doesn't break down the tires as fast as oxygen does. so the tires stay fuller longer, which then in turn means you are less likely to be driving on low tires which would give you poor mileage. if you try hard enough you can relate everything back to mileage to scare the consumer. lots of the discount tires and others offer to fill your tires by me with nitrogen.

On a regular street car you couldnt get enough nitrogen in the tire to make a difference, plus you have to remember the mass weight of the wheel and tire bolted to the the car would still be the same. In racing they usally use nitrogen because it eliminates mostiure so 1) you get a better balance on the wheel/tire, and 2) the pressure doesnt increase hardly any due to there being no mositure in it.

Ya it is better for the tire because of not having to worry about the moisture. Tire shops around where I live offer it but you have to pay extra for it. If you ever see a car with green caps on their valves, they have nitrogen in their tires. They put the green caps on
as a reminder that there is nitrogen in the tire so you dont mix it with air. Most people remove the green caps because they look like $hit and stand out. But I do see quite a few people with the green caps on still.
