Default advice plz?

I'm about to change my oil for the first time on the mustang, got it 4 months ago. Anything I need to be aware of specifically or is everything just self explanitory? I just bought a jack and some stands. I also bought 6 quarts of Mobil 1 full synthetic 10W30 and a good fram oil filter since I live in Florida. Will I need one of those oil drain pans? or do you think I can just put it in any empty container?

I would use a drain pan just because it makes the job a little easier. Also, sometimes on my car the filter is a little hard to get off, so I put a hole in it with a pick and let the oil drain out into the pan. Doing that seems to make it come off a little easier (i guess it relieves pressure or something) and prevents alot of oil from draining out all over the place when you get the filter loose and pull it off. Other than all that its really really easy.

Crap, now I gotta run to walmart and buy an oil pan, and I might as well grab a funnel while I'm there. Would a strap wrench be worth buying for the oil filter? I don't think I have a pick, and the screwdrivers are probably too bulky.[:@]

a wrench or one of those filter claws work just fine for the filter and the oil drain plug is a 5/8 and your car should only take 5 quarts of oil.

I have used a screwdriver before to pre-drain the filter before removing it, but its just a harder. But you don't have to do it that way, I just find it a little easier.

I would use 5w-30 instead of 10w-30, your motor was built for the thinner oil and thats what ford reccomends to use.

oh..hmm maybe I should return it and swap it out. But I live in Florida where it is always hot and humid, won't that be a problem if the oil is too thin and not lubricating the engine enough because it breaks down from being really hot?

I bought the extra quart just incase, to carry around in my trunk if it burns off, or if I spill any trying to get it in the engine.

From my racing expirance syn oil doesnt start breaking down till around 280, if you have oil temps that high you got serious problems. these motors are built tight so it takes thin oil to lube them properly.
