Default How do you flush the cooling system on a 97 4.6?

Since I've bought my car, I've been checking out every little detail about it to make sure that it's in tip-top condition and everything is right and stays right while I drive it. I noticed the other day that the coolant in the reservoire looked a little strange, but I couldn't tell if it was just the light going through the plastic or not, so I stuck a pen in there and mixed everything around a bit .... my pen came out looking like it just got done a dirty *** probe or somethin ... it had brown crap all over it, and I could see the **** floating around in my reservoire now too. It's all settled to the bottom of the reservoire, but I don't like the idea of my water/coolant being that dirty...and the same goes for the internals which house the water/coolant. So how do I give it a good flush? It can't just be done through the reservoire, I'm sure ...
I did search this topic and saw some great adivce, but I think it was for an earlier model Stang with a rad cap and stuff - the only access I have to coolant is through the reservoire/overflow ... I think.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

drain it all out of there. Then go to Orielys or what not and get some radiator flush, fill up it all up with water. Then go run it around to running temp, then drain it all agian. Repeat till the water runs clear. Then fill it up with your anti freeze/distilled water. Then run it up the running temp again then let it cool down then top it off. When I did mine it kept needing topping for a day or two after, cuase it worked out all the air pockets n such, so i just added coolant untill she was full.

When I searched the forum, I read that you shouldn't use commercial flushing products because it could loosen something up and cause the whole system to get clogged up and potentially cause a lot of damage. The post I was reading was talkin about cutting into the heater hose right by the t-stat and adding in a T tube or another tube to make it possible to hook your hose up to the heater line and run the water through the system that way, till it's clean. But like I said, maybe that was only for an older style mustang....anyone know if and how you can do that on my motor?

It's either do it yourself at home with a self flushing kit, or take it somewhere and pay like 80ish bucks for a professional reverse flush/fill..

Just do the home flush and if you have problems (and you shouldn't) take it to the pros..

The self-flushing kit, meaning the commercial acidic additives? Or is there an actual "kit"? I'll have a look when I'm in Canadian Tire this afternoon...
Thanks!

you can either add the radiator flush and follow the directions or actually buy a reverse flush kit that you have to cut and add a splitter so you can attach the hose to the system and do the flush. If you aren't comforatable with doing the the addititive (easy) or flush kit( lil harder) just have it taken someplace and have them do it.

It's not really a matter of what i'm comfortable doing, as long as there are instructions, I'm fine with it. My concerns are strictly
1) Least expensive way to do it
2) Least danger of damaging something (the additive could bung things up and cause problems like I explained above, right?)
2) Most effective

Is THIS post (about 7 posts down) referring to sometihng I can do? Or is that only on an older Stang?
