Default Tranny Problem

Alright guys i was at qualcomm, racing my stang. one run i miss shifted into third so i backed off of it and just coasted across the finish line. when i was back in line to race again i noticed that my shifter would just slide in and out of third and fouth without the clutch engaged. the shifter will go into third and fouth, so its not locked out but the tranny wount go into third or fourth. so for now i have only first second and fifth gear. i think it might be a disconnected linkage or maybe i broke the shifter itself. if anyone has any ideas any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can tell you exactly what your problem is. You busted the 3-4 shift gate, which links the shifter rod to the shift fork. You'll have to gut the tranny and have it replaced. As far as I know there is no aftermarket part, so you'll have to order it from a tranny shop or from Ford. I had to have mine replaced awhile ago because I did the same thing, except it was the 1-2 shift gate. $1,400 later I had a nice rebuilt tranny with fresh internals. Oh well, my synchros were already getting worn out.

P.S. If your car is stuck in gear, don't try to put it in 1st or 2nd and drive anywhere, because if the 3-4 shift fork is engaging either 3rd or 4th gear, you will essentially be engaging 2 gears at once, which can cause some serious damage to your gears or main shaft. Also, if you don't have any transmission rebuilding experience, let a shop do it. There's a lot you can screw up.

Uhhh no. As soon as you put it on a race track the warrenty is voided until it is off the track. Plus things like that usually don't happen when you are normally driving. They can say you were operating the car out of the normal operating range and void your warrenty.
You can try but don't be surprised if they say no.
Powershifting will get you everytime you miss.

I was in my nova racing a cobra a few years back, he broke his trans and got it fixed under warranty.
How is the dealer going to know it was at the track?
Chances are good that they won't take it apart to see whats broke, they'll just r&r it.
You could always say you pulled out in traffic and had to get on it[sm=smiley36.gif]

Not sure if 01's have the 3650 tranny but, given the fact that the 3650 tranny is a POS and a missed powershift usually ruins the tranny. They do have problems with the 3650 in the 2003 model with a 1-2 grind when cold and occasional lock out into 3rd, but Ford is saying it is normal and will not do anything until it breaks. They might do it under warrenty.

I know of these problems because I have them, but when ever I take it to Ford they say there is nothing wrong and it didn't grind[:@]. When I pick the car up it is fine for a few days then comes back. Have me waiting until it gets worse before I bring it back. The next time I do, I am going to drop the car off on a Friday night go there on Saturday morning and take the Tech out for a ride and show him what it does. Wicked pain in the ****. I find myself skipping 1-2 in the mornings and going 1-3 until the tranny gets warm and still it grinds from time to time.

the same thing happened to me in my 97 gt. i was frying a 2000 si civic pot of rice and then i shifted too hard into 3rd. i went to race fry him again and it wouldnt shift into 3rd or 4th. i gutted the tranny it was a broken shift fork. i got the fork from ford for like 77.00 dollars and had it fixed in like 2 days for like 100.00. but the shift forks are aluminum so they are going to break

The cure as I understand it, is to install any aftermarket shifter with built in stops. The stock set up relies on the fork itself to stop the shifter, with an aftermarket shifter the stops stop the shifter handle when you're yanking on it during a hard shift so the forks never get the full force of you slamming the shift handle.

I used to powershift my 03 gt and I deff broke some ****! it would grind going into third unless I babied it. I took it to the ford deal I bought it from, and took a tech out on a ride, he knew exactly what it was, and didnt care that I had a bunch of mods on my car. I got a brand new tranny no questions asked! take it to the dealer dude!
