Default Clutch - Throwout Bearing

When I depress the clutch pedal there is a some resistance and the pedal feels loose at times. The Ford dealer said it was probably the throwout bearing and would cost about $1,000. Could it be something else? Any recomendations on mechanics in the Santa Monica, West LA area? What questions should I ask to avoid getting ripped off? Thanks.

that is easy to change, and the part is $40 at most. It could be done if a few hours. I could not say if this is your issue or not.

Oh man when I lived there there was a shop off the 57 below the 91 in Downey and they were good, I mean real good, they are in MMFF too. 1,000 for a throwout bearing, that's a bit spendy. there is another shop in Montclare N of the 10 off Loma Pl in Upland. This was about 4 years ago.

I say drive it till it goes. Really that's not the hardest thing to tackle yourself. If you have a place to do it and some tools to do it with it's possible to do it yourself. I really wouldn't change it unless you have to.

I definitely can't do it myself. If I drive it til it goes is there risk of doing further damage to the transmission? Thanks.

Just get a new clutch kit, get something more heavy duty like the king cobra. It also comes with a throw out bearing, and if you go to a decent shop they can have the flywheel resurfaced for you and install it for about $200-$300. You can find the king cobra clutch kit for about $165-$170.

I agree. The King Cobra clutch is an awesome clutch for daily driving on a bolt-on GT.
