Whats with all the 5.4L posts?
It seems like all of a sudden people are interested in 5.4 swaps.
Does anyone have a good source of information on these swaps? I have a few questions:
1. How strong is the bottom end of a 5.4L SOHC engine? What is the max RWHP the shortblock will take? (aka stonger or weaker than a stock 4.6 setup).
2. What are the gains of a back to back swap? On a stock engine how much power should you pick up with only this swap? What about on a supercharged setup???
3. Is there any difference in 5.4L 2v heads (compared to 2v 4.6 ones?) Can you simply bolton any year of 4.6L head onto any 5.4L shortblock?
4. Are there any modifcations nessicarry to the car or computer? (k member etc).

RE: Whats with all the 5.4L posts?
here is all i can do to help you, in mm&ff they have an artical in their july issue onpage 52 called modular mysteries revealed. this tells you about a book put out by richard holdener, in this book are hard facts of different comboes of mods for 4.6 & 5.4 he has documented dyno pulls on 84 before and after mods on both motors. it may be interesting to read . the book costs $24.95 + $4.95 s/h the phone # is (800)551-4754 or www.cartechbooks.com hope that this helps you out, i plan on getting this book soon.

Does anyone have a good source of information on these swaps? I have a few questions:
1. How strong is the bottom end of a 5.4L SOHC engine? What is the max RWHP the shortblock will take? (aka stonger or weaker than a stock 4.6 setup). Depending on the year of 5.4L that you get, will depend on which type of crank that you can get. The 1997-early 1999 models came with a steel crank. Lateer 99 and up 5.4L came with a cast crank. The 5.4 block will take the same amount of HP that a 4.6 liter will. Only difference between the 2 motors is the 5.4 deck height is a bit taller and has a longer stroke.
2. What are the gains of a back to back swap? On a stock engine how much power should you pick up with only this swap? What about on a supercharged setup??? Torque is THE big gain going from a 4.6 to a 5.4. Not sure because I just ordered my motor and it hasn't gotten here yet.
3. Is there any difference in 5.4L 2v heads (compared to 2v 4.6 ones?) Can you simply bolton any year of 4.6L head onto any 5.4L shortblock? This is easy. The 5.4 heads and 4.6 heads are IDENTICAL! If you have after market heads and cams for your 4.6 then they will bolt right up to a 5.4.
4. Are there any modifcations nessicarry to the car or computer? (k member etc). None. The computer will have to be tuned to allow for an increase in displacement.
Headers will be tricky. You will probably have to get the headers lengthened.

I'm not completely positive, but I believe the heads will bolt up.
Talk to http://www.modularmustangracing.com/ I know they have done many 5.4 swaps. As far as taking like a navigator engine or something, I dont think its worth it at all.

So bascically you will gain TQ, but maybe not much horsepower, and the shortblock is not any stronger than the 4.6 one (being that I don't think you will break the crank before you damage a rod/piston)

RE: Whats with all the 5.4L posts?
If I'm not mistaken (I may be), the 5.4 is a 4.6 with a taller deck height, it has the same bore as the 4.6, just a longer stroke. I believe the pistons and the rods are the same, and the crank is different to accomodate the longer stroke. The heads should bolt right up between the 5.4 and 4.6. I believe a lot of the parts can be swapped between them.
Find the power ratings for a 5.4 Expedition (2v sohc), and the 5.4 Lincoln Navigator (4v dohc) and that just compare to a GT/Mach respectively. I don't think they have enough power for Ford to give them forged internals.
