Since I have been spending a lot of time on the underside of my 2002 Mustang GT lately, I've been staring at the exhaust system a lot. Which got me to wondering if this system is stock or aftermarket. It starts out with regular cast iron exhaust manifolds, and then when it gets to where the pipes are close to the ground, where the pipes make the turn to the back, there is a little thing on each side which look like some kind of miniature catalytic converters. Then, there are pipes straight back which cross in an X pattern back behind the transmission, which connect to what looks like some turbo mufflers right after the x, then regular pipes straight back to the tips. Any thoughts?

I can't say for sure, because I didn't have the stock exhaust when I got mine, but I'm pretty sure all GTs came with H pipes from the factory, so the fact that it sounds like you have an X pipe--something is aftermarket. Perhaps the previous owner put on a cat back exhaust?
I'm sure someone can shed some more light on it for you. Pictures would help.
