Default How do transmission flushes work?

having my auto tranny flushed in a couple days, and they said something about running 20qts of fluid through the thing using a machine, so as to make sure they get all the old stuff out. hmmm.... i thought the thing only held 14, what does 20 do?

my question is, i bought 14qts of royal purple to throw in there instead of whatever they are going to use, but how can they use it if they have this machine pumping fluid through it? is the pumped fluid simply drained and then the transmission is refilled?

thanks!

The extra 6 qts. are run through the trans and torque convertor, to make sure ALL of the old fluid has been replaced with the new fluid. In my opinion thats the best way to change the fluid, because the torque convertor holds a lot so lots of debris could be built up in there.

The place I had my old tranny done put Lucas in the mix of fluid, so when the machine flushed it, it replaced the old w/ new and Lucas..

Not sure of their set-up, but I'm sure it's possible.... It may cost you more though...

i was curious if the fluid could mix at all, of it had to be straight one of the other... id HATE to have to get another 7 qts of the royal purple ATF, that **** is expensive.

+1 on that. I just changed mine to r/p and it wasn't cheap.
