Default A/F Gauge

What is everyone talking about when they say that a narrowband A/F gauge is useless? Does it not read properly or what? How is a wideband different?

So, if I am getting a professional tune, do I really need a wide band? I meen, the narrow will basically be used as a broad monitor of the a/f ratio and nothing else right?
