RE: Need advice
not sure if it different in different states, but they will go by the book value of teh car, which could be good or bad depending on how much you paid. if you think your car is worth less than the book, ask for them to do an estimate. I had a 90 celica that was a pile of S, but got it from my wife's sister for like $700. The book said it was like 4600 and this car wasnt worth the 700 i paid (216K mi, body damage, lights didnt work, smell of cat pee, ect) so they appraised it at liek 1000.

OK, lets say (theoretically) I bought this mustang and did that, and the gov't sent me a letter saying that I could send them any of 4 specified documents to prove that I bought the car for what it is listed under the title, or else I would have to pay the tax PLUS a penalty which is twice the amount of the tax. What would you do? You guys think they would further investigate the case once I send them a bill of sale?

RE: Need advice
I just talked to the previous owner, and he thinks that this letter is just an automated computer that sends letters out when they see a big price difference in the Average Loan Value and the Purchase Price of the Title. I'm just wondering if sending a Bill of Sale would satisfy them, or would they investigate further? And just for the record, the price difference listed was pretty damn big (now I'm regretting agreeing to do this)
