A friend of mine was telling me just the other day about how he saw a Camaro literally blew up a C/F D/S at the track, just on a launch... I'm leaning towards the fact that the D/S was not assembled right, but, if it was, then that would truly suck, especially if you're driving down the highway, and it goes out on you....

In theory yes...
The thing is, your mods are only as good as the supporting mods around it... If all you have is an Al. D/S, you may never notice a difference... Then again, if you had the lightened Flywheel, light clutch, light wheels, and U/D Pullies, lightening of the car; throw a AL D/S on there, and I bet you'll think you just gained 30hp...
Anything you can do to lessen the load on the engine, will give you gains, no matter how insignificant it may seem....
