RE: small knock, lifters?
i tried and gave up on replacing my valve guide seals. too tough for my skill level to get at with the engine in the car.... so i've decided to save for an engine swap

good luck man... the lifters may be one thing, but the valve stem seals are another. It was so retardedly gay to get the keepers out with the engine in the car you wouldn't believe... no wait... PUTTING THEM BACK IN... o man I only did one valve! enough to say let it wait until the engine is out

Nice, are these mechanics aware you have a SOHC 4.6 engine? God damn MORONS. Keep your car away from them, try to be properly educated yourself the next time you head to the mechanic.
You will never find lifters in your engine and you have 'cams'. One camshaft per head.

+1!!
Those guys have NO idea wtf they are talking about... you do NOT have a pushrod/OHV motor, you have a modular OHC motor.
A small knock could be a lot of things.. are you sure its not detonation? bad gas? Did it just start or has it been doing it a while?
