1998 Cobra 4.6 32 valve engine swap for 2004 Cobra 4.6 32 valve SC engine
I have a 1998 Mustang Cobra with a 32v 4.6 which has spun a bearing. I have the opportunity to purchase a 2001 zero miles Cobra engine, and/or a 2004 zero miles Cobra SC engine as a replacement. Both engines are brand new with electrical harnesses and install ready. I have been told the 2001 engine will be easier to install because of the ECU and wiring are more compatible to my 1998 platform. . I wonder if anyone has heard of, or performed this swap before. I know I will have to purchase a higher volume fuel pump, a different Mass Air Sensor, and possibly a new ECU for the 2004 engine, and maybe even a heavier duty radiator. I know an upgraded exhaust is needed also. I have been told there is a wiring harness between the engine compartment and the ECU that controls the dash gauges and interior functions. I'm told this will have to be replaced also. Is this true? I also called the Ford Motor Racing dept. and was told the 2004 SC 4.6 32v swap was not that complicated, Ford racing said the Eaton blower is self contained and does not depend on the ECU to produce boost. They claim most everything is a direct plug in..."Plug and Play". Can anyone tell me what the pitfalls are for a 1998 to 2004 SC 4.6 32 valve swap, or point me to someplace that would know these things. Thanks

RE: 1998 Cobra 4.6 32 valve engine swap for 2004 Cobra 4.6 32 valve SC engine
I found there are dozens of places that have these zero mile engines. http://enginesdirect.net Some places buy a portion of the remaining stock assembly line engines Ford has produced. Of those, Some of these are engines that were used to test emissions and have the equivalent to 200 miles or less on them. I contacted Ford Motor Company in my own scepticism, but found out otherwise. I finally contacted some shops that have performed the swap and found the ECM portion was very tricky and six months after the swap, there are still bugs being worked out. So.....I have decided to stuff my Cobra's internals with aftermarket parts and a blower.
