Default DOHC in a '96 GT?

I bought my '96 GT about a year and a half ago. At that time I got some work done on the engine at a local shop. The owner of the shop told me the car had a DOHC. He said that it may have been a specail order from Ford. At the time I thought he didn't know what he was talking about. A friend of mine is helping me fix a part on the car, and he told me that it had a DOHC after we started working on the car.

Did Ford make GTs with a DOHC, or are these two guys wrong? If Ford did make GTs with DOHC, what's the power in the cars, and is it a better engine than a GT with a SOHC?

ford didnt make a gt with a dohc....chances are the mechanic thinks that a sohc is a dohc because it has 2 cams, 1 on each side...unless a previous owner put a cobra motor in your car

it cost a little bit but you can have one changed to a DOHC. Maybe thats what the previous owner did. If its a 4.6 just take off the valve cover on one side and there should be 2 cams there. If it is SOHC then there is only one on each side meaning you have only 16 valves. DOHC is a 32 valve engine.

the valve covers should say 32V DOHC if its a cobra motor, but if your not sure take one off and see if it has 2 cams on one head, as was stated above.
