4.6 Knocking-BIG PROBLEM
I just got a 2000 Ford Mustang GT, and the bastard started to knock today. It knocks all the time anywhere after about 4000. And during a certain amount of throttle it knocks too. My question is, what do u guys think it is, and will all engines 99-present. Fit into my car without changing anything? Im going to have the dealer replace my engine, but i want to make sure that i get the right one. Also, how do u tell the difference between the p.i. engine and the older 4.6's, just so i can make sure he doesnt screw me around. Thanks, Robert

I dont know yet. The dealer i bought the car from will have to determine that. He will probably try and tell me that he will find an engine for it and he will get one that has 90 or 100k on it and drop in it and hope it lasts. We shall see.

just keep in mind if you do that you dont know were that engine came from there are some website that you can order a engine with warrenty if you want to spend the money or you can save some money and get yours rebuilt. just remember an engine with 90k to 100k that has been beaten witch you will not know is on its death bed and most mustangs get beaten i got my engine from rhinoengines.com 3 yr warrenty brand new

that would be you best bet drive minamul and hope its just something on top... you might end up spending 500-1000 parts and labor unless you know someone that will do the labore cheaper well good luck keep us posted on what you do

hold on before you go changing motors i have talked to numerous people about when I had my knock very loud then rattled i was almost asuming i was detenating but i wasn't a few people told be that timing chains go out as in stretched or somthing and they can cause a knock but it echos and sounds like it come from the block. second ford told be that the 4.6l engine did not make a complete smoth rotation so the offseted the piston and rod about .025 thousands but it sometimes still knocks. anyways point saying i replaced my cam gears both primary timing chains and my crank gear and guides and tensioners knock is gone hasn't come back for me.

ive been going through the same issue. had a knock took it to Ford with my Extended warrenty. now im getting a new engine. in my case it was the rod..i went to look at it the other day, the mechanic had the engine on the stand and grabbed the rod and moved from side to side on the crank. but i should be getting my car back this thursday.
