I think my car has officially lost 4th gear. When i drive and shift into 4th it will stay in for just a couple of seconds and then pop out and grind. I am not sure what it is and I hope it is not too much to repair seeing as I have no money. If you have any input please help me. What could it be? Cost to repair it?

I hate hearing that. I had an Integra and I lost 3rd. Cost me a new transmission. I hope yours is a much easier fix than mine was.

Just went to Cottman Transmissions and had them drive it. He said he thinks it is the shifter, which I thought it was originally, seeing as 4th does not seem to go as deep as do second and reverse. He said that there may be a broken piece of plastic or something that is preventing it from staying in gear. He doesn't think it is a syncro because it will go into gear it just doesn't want to stay in all the time. Does this sound right to any of you guys?

untwist the ****, and remove the shift boot and remove the dust shield. If it wasnt the original, double check the shift stops on the shifter. if its the original remove the shifter and look

I still would lean to the synchro's. just double check the shifter first

the shifter MAYBE

it sounds like the synchro hub... the synchro hub has little spring loaded snaps that hold it in gear, that's what it is when you feel/hear the 'click' into gear....

i dunno how 4th could take a crap, usually it's 2nd or 3rd

Thats what I am saying. Every other gear feels fine. I have no problem getting in or staying in any other gear. Most of the time if you pull hard it will go into and stay in 4th for a while. After a few minutes or a few seconds it will just pop back out. Thank you to everybody for your responses it will all help a lot.

I wanna say you are in the Marines?

EDIT: reason I ask, is a good friend of mine has been away a year training with the Marines... and in a month he goes to the front of the front lines in Iraq

Sounds like something to do with the shifter to me. If the stopper has something in front of it in the fourth gear slot that would cause it to pop out because it's not full engaging. If it only happens in fourth it has to be something simple like that...I can imagine just losing fourth all of a sudden and nothing else. It's easy to get to...just take a peek at it and maybe adjust the stopper if nothing else.
