I took my crank pully bolt off with a breaker bar and a scweardriver(and help from my brother). I got under the car and jammed the screwdriver in the fly wheel and he turnd the breaker.Came right off. And as far as getting the actually pully off. You do need the harmonic puller. You can "rent" on from O'reilly's or Autozone. I say "rent" cuz you give thme 20 bucks then you give the tool back and they give you back the money.

But for the alternator a imact is a HUGE help!!

Yeah you can rent a puller, or you can just buy one for $15 or $20 and not have to worry about renting one anymore.
