They have a few, one major being the coolant leaks they have from the intake manifold. And if you just want a cheap Mustang, thats newer looking then id say ok buy on. But if you have plans on making some decent hp, buy new or an older 5.0. You could buy it if you have knowldge about 4.6 mod motors, because they you can rip it down and do something with it.

True, and if you really want a 4.6 Mustang, do yourself a HUGE favor and try to find a '99+ model so you get a Mustang with PI heads, unless you really like the '96-'98 body style, in which case you could always swap in a set of PI heads later on. The intake leak is a major problem, so sooner or later you'll have to replace it with a newer model intake with the aluminum water crossover. Other than that I don't think there are any issues related to the '96 specifically that would be a major problem. The 5.0 option is a good idea also, because they are lighter, cheaper, and the aftermarket is HUGE for a 5.0 Mustang.

I agree 100% with USAMuscle if your intent is to go faster. That 96 is inherently weak from the factory, and it would cost you 1500+ at a minimum just to make it as fast as a 99+ , and is alot more expensive and less fruitful to modify.

The clutch.......The Chief mechanic at one of the ford dealerships here told me that ford has a major problem with clutch in those cars...I had taken my 2000 GT in to get the clutch replaced and i saw a 97 GT in there and it was also getting it's clutch repaired....The mechanic told me that ford really made the clutches weak in the Modular mustangs and the problem still hasn't been corrected to this day....Check the clutch on it before you buy it.

Maybe i live in the wrong area, i work at a FORD dealership and never had any problems with clutchs. We had a 279,000 mile 95 Gt come in for his first clutch. And my 98 doesnt have any problems. the only problem that i know of it the clutch cable and throw out bearing. The bearing makes a noise when the clutch pedel is not pushed in. and to better that you can buy a new one from ford that is revised and adjust the pedal at the same time.

Casper,

How much does that cost to get the new throwout bearing and adjust the pedal?

Well, buy a Steeda adjustable cable, i'd buy the kit they have. I think you get the qaudrant, cable and something else. Then buy the FORd part if you;d like, or just buy a whole clutch kit. you get a new t-o bearing with it. then remove youre trans and slap it in. resurface the flywheel and youre good to go. And if you drive along and you hear that god forsaken ticking noise then when you push the clutch in it goes away. I'd try an adjustable clutch cable first. Cause alot of times the cable is not adjusted right. If youre driving along and you hear a really bad noise and youre pony wont move, then i'd suggest buying a new T-o bearing. thats what happaned to my dads cobra. lol . The concern FORD had with the throw out bearing, was it didnt have proper grease in the bearing so it would freeze up, and blow apart. But if it sems fine and you have been drving on it im sure its just the cable. The revised FORD part is about 12.99 my cost. Maybe 24.99 for the public. Then i dont know how much the labor rate is where youre geting it done, or if you do it youreself its easier. Well im done rambling for now. Let me know if you need anything else.
