Do tuners really make a difference?

RE: Do tuners really make a difference?
Question: Whether you've got 'mods or not, what parameters of the car's tune are you changing with a tuner? I'm assuming that, for example, if you've got a CAI you would retune the car's air/fuel mixture to compensate for the added air?

i suppose you guys are right... i mean from what youve said i take it that it is necessary but not crucial... i will get one in that case just to be safe but i just dont want to face the dissapointment of the fact that i dont recognise anything and am faced with the reality that it was a waste of time!

I highly doubt you will see major HP gains from a handheld on a n/a NPI GT with a generic box tune.
The box tune I had from diablo (chip) was acutally costing me about 12 WHP after I put my exhaust/intake boltons on.

and handheld is really just a generic dyno tune. it can also set shift points and firmness on autos. you can also bump up the timing for more power. you can adjust the speedo when you get gears or different size tires.
the main thing that interests me (i have a manual pi gt) is the ability for better dyno tunes by tim at mph (i live bout an hour from the shop) and the ability to increase the timing and correct the speedo
