Default Moving to CA... need some help!

I was wondering if anyone knew how bad the laws are in Cali regarding exhaust??
I have a 02 GT with the Magnaflow x-pipe and magnaflow magnapacks.
Am I going to be ok with emissions and what not?
Thanks for any help!

Do you still have your cats?
CA and from what I hear VA are the two worst states for emissions.

Make sure then that the cats you do have are C.A.R.B certified, otherwise they may have you remove them and replace them with either the stockers or an aftermarket one that has them.

You might want to check out smog exemptions for out of state vehicles though. You may not need to worry about it.

question #4 in the second section (California Smog Check and Registration Questions) it sounds like as long as you are street legal you're fine. In otherwords no O/R X pipes.

thanks man.. that helps a lot!
My car came from Texas with this set up and was ok there... but that doesnt say much.
Im sure if i have to change out the cats... there is a huge stang shop right down the street from where i am going to live... so i am guessing they will have something i can borrow to get through emissions/inspections.... it wouldnt be like i want to keep their stuff on anyways as it would only make me slower(wink wink)

This will depend on where in CA. you are going. Some areas have much stricter smog checks than others. Here in Sac, on my last car (93 camry) they did a visual and a sniffer. The sniffer was done at idle, and under load. I have talked to a few exhaust places here about aftermarket catted X-pipes, and most stated that it would be better for me (Hassle-wise) to not do it. There seems to be A LOT of cops here who know their cars and can identify when your exhaust is legal or not. I could just get an O/R X and have cats welded in the correct spots, but that would cost a lot of $$$. FWIW, on my old firebird, I had a high-flow cat, and passed smog no problem. Good luck with whatever route you decide to take.

well, lemme put it this way, there isn't a midpipe on earth that is legal in CA for a new edge stang. no midpipes have a CARB # because the cats have to be the same as stock for a midpipe to get a CARB #. with that said, just find some smog place that looks like they don't pay the employees enough and bribe them or something. you don't need to worry about cops, they don't look under the cars. legality soundwise would depend on which a-hole pulled you over. I assure you 100% that you are not legal with regards to the sound ordinances. with magnapacks and the xpipe. you'll pass a sniffer, and the visual just depends on who is checking your car.

OH GREAT!
I was on the magnaflow website.. and was looking at the F&Q section...

Question: Are MagnaFlow Performance Exhaust systems legal?

Answer: YES, all of our Cat-Back Exhaust Systems comply with most state and federal laws with the exception of the Magnapacks.
