i figured it was somewhat normal, but i just wanted to be sure.
im guessing that all of you without cats smell gas a little too...thats what makes me think its running lean

stock from the factory our cars are made to run rich, so w/o cats you will smell gas and get black deposits on your tailpipe. i had the same problem and now my exhaust is dumped so you cant see the black deposit. but i definately smell the gas fumes. DYNO TUNE next week

RE: Black Deposits in Tailpipe?
Try having 4" Rolled Stainless Stell tips sticking out the back on an uncatted midpipe. Then you'll really get black deposits/brown stains EVERYWHERE.
Since the tips are rolled, anyone within 25 feet can see the stains too. Go from about 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock all over the rolled edge.
If you have stock pipes, or something that is'nt stainless steel. But if you're worried about cleaning them effectively, try using Eagle One Never Dull. That, along with some scraping from the fingernail shines them back up nicely.
(I do believe some members use paint thinner/nail polish, but I would hesitate since most tailpipes are kind of close to the painted rear bumper)
