what is a spun bearing?

RE: what is a spun bearing?
Hey there...spun bearing is BAD news... the conecting rod bolts to the crankshaft with end caps to make a complete circle around the crankshaft.in between the crankshaft and conecting rod i[&o]s a metal ring in two pieces.one lower ,one upper.this is what cushions the load when your engine is runing.there is a microscopic clearance between these parts that is lubricared with your oil. When run low of oil these (bearings )heat up quick and shrink until there is no more clearance and then they weld themselves to the end cap then SPIN on the crankshaft,,usually damaging the crankshaft, end caps ..etc.This causes all kinds of damage depending on how long the engine was run in this condition..(that is as easy as i can describe it for you )hope this helps you..

thanks man, there is an 88 notch for sale for 6500 that is basically a drag car that has a spun bearing and wanted to know how bad it was and how much it would to replace the crank and rods.
this would be a car that would only be for the track so ill talk to the guy again and see if he can come down in price.

Now be extra careful.. I've seen cars that spun a bearing, that trashed the ENTIRE engine from not just debris, but from the piston slapping back and forth against the cylinder walls...
If you can, have the seller take the oil pan off, and show you what it looks like...

RE: what is a spun bearing?
on a different subject, if the motor has already been completley rebulit from a performace shop because of a spun bearing would the new motor be prone to breaking as well?

If the shop was a little slack during the rebuild (checking clearances of all moving parts)are suposed to be done before closing up the motor, then it is possable there was not enough clearance between the bearings to begin with ,thus causing extra heat and coking what little oil there was between them and causing the spun bearing.

RE: what is a spun bearing?
i basically lost my whole engine from a spun rod bearing. clayton is pretty much right on, and you can bet that the cost to repair will be up there, especially if it's an aftermarket engine. chances are the whole rotating assembly needs to be replaced, or might as well be due to the damage.

RE: what is a spun bearing?
Not quite. The rod bearings are seated in the connecting rods and normally spin on the crankshaft. A spun rod bearing happens when the bearing spins inside the rod. A spun crank bearing is when the bearing spins inside the main cap.
