Default Intake AIr

I am a new Mustang owner and I am about to start playing with the performance. It's a 03 GT and I think I would like to start with CAI and Tuner. This question has probably come across before so I am sorry if it's repeat BUT,
Is a CAI really needed or can a K&N filter provide the same inprovement? Can I get a good Tuner that won't require a trip to a dyno for setup. Just basically plug and play. I will eventually change the cat back exhaust if this helps the answers.
Thanks for any help.

the k&n filter by itself will give you the same improvement. the cai's are for looks really

the SCT XCalibrater2 and the Diablo Predator tuners are both plug and play with no need to go to a shop or a dyno.
