Default shift point (need help)

hows it going. A friend of mine just bought a '98 stang in great condition. Its his first car and is fairly new at driving a 5 speed. He knows how to and all, just doesn't have a lot of experience. Anyhow, him and I are gonna go up to the strip and run our cars (his '98 stang, my '01 z06) for the fun of it.

Anyhow, on the stang the redline is a bit confusing. On every car I've seen there has only been solid red, or yellow/orange and then red. Anyhow, on the stang its first I think 1000 rpms in thin red lines and then solid red. Wanted to find out where actual redline shift when dragging point is. before red lines, or before the actual red. Im sure it SOUNDS confusing, but you guys should know what I mean..

thanks for the help,

from my experience in a 98 sixer stang, around 4200 rpms is best for dragging in stock form. you should be able to get around 4400 rpm in 3rd gear at the end of the track at bout 85 mph.

the tach looks like that to save the car from abuse. the motor will stand up to 5500 rpm, but since the factory settings do not make any real power past 4200, theres no point in revving it so high so ford adjusted the tach accordingly. a chip which will allow you to make power to the stock rev limiter at 5225 rpm, will be good for about 45 hp

well he put his info on the six, so i'll do the eight. on 4.6's, even though the redline is at 6, the engine (according to ford) can take 7. but like the v-6, there is NO need to take it up that high. torque peaks around 4800 thus slightly above that is a good point to shift. make sure to launch around 2-3 grand in order to get max thrust off the line.

is that the hardest part, revving without going too much and then spinning the tires?

Dont pat attention to the red those cars are not building any power at that high of a rev your losing power, you need to shift when it hits 5200 and by time you shift its actually around 5600 and thats where the car starts losing power and it keeps you in your power band, these motors arent v-tecs
