Can anyone tell me anything about gears? I have a 2001 GT, stock. im not sure what the ratio is, but i'd like to know what kind of performance (changes in gas mileage )i can get with new gears in different ratios and where i can find them. Thanks

Most people here are just going to shout 4.10... there's your warning.
Your stock gearing is 3.27. New gears can be found all over, check the ford racing catalog, mustangtuning.com, and many other places... they're all over. You're looking for a ring and pinion set for a Ford 8.8" rear. Common swaps are 3.73, 3.90, and 4.10. You also have the option for 3.55, and 4.30(?)/4.56... you can go on the other end with 2.73, but you'll end up feeling slower there.
Most say you'll lose 1-2 MPG with 4.10s... however, the reality of it is, with your stock gears on the highway you're turning 2200 RPM at 80, with 4.10s it's closer to 3200... maybe a tad higher. You'll certainly feel more of a difference the higher you go. Be aware if you get 4.10s, you'll run out 4th gear at about 112 MPH, so if you ever want to go faster than that in the 1/4 mile, go with a lower gear.
Edit: I was way off on my highway estimations of 4.10s. 70 MPH with stock gears and stock tires is 2037 RPM (Close to accurate, however, the subject transmission is a TR3550 NOT the TR3650 that is in mid 01-04 stangs)... with 4.10s this goes up to 2554 RPM.

RE: gears
I have 3.90's and hit 120-125... stepbrother has 4.10's, and he can hit 115-120ish with his 4.10's... Just search the forums, there are TONS AND TONS of gear threads
We need to make one gear thread and put it as a sticky, lol - there's atleast 2 a day still..

RE: gears
Yeah, take a look at this, 4th gear with factory tire size.
At either rate, you're not making power that high... while that's fine for running out 4th gear on the 1/4... you can do better.

RE: gears
yeah it also told me that my 4th gear at 5800rpm is 113mph.. which I know ive seen my speedo at 120+before getting into 5th gear.. according to that calc to get to 123mph i'd have to be at 6300rpms... which ive definatly never done. I also have 275/40 17 tires

i am only measuring to 4th gear.. according to that calc at the top of 5th gear (5800rpms) i'd be at a top spd of 167mph

Please note that if you are calculating a gear ratio, the value is an approximation based on your estimates of speed and rpm.
Speed Values are theoretical, and do not compensate for wind drag at high speeds.
