Mass air leaning

Mass air leaning
In the July issue of MMFF there is an article about free mods for the Mach 1.One of these is removing the screen from the mass air meter. They gained 7.4 HP but said it caused the air fuel ratio to go from 12.1 to 13.1.The testers say that this is not good for a daily driver. Why,if you gain HP and fuel economy and no check engine lights, would this be bad for a daily driver.Any enlightenment on this subject will be appreciated.

RE: Mass air leaning
well i just changed my mass air to a c&l mass air kit and it replaces the mass air and the stock air box. there is no screeen in the system. i also read that artical and i was wondering if my car would be too lean also from this mod. with this mod C&L recomends using 92 or above octane to prevent detonation. basically its detonation that there worried about and so am i. thats why as soon as i can i am going to get dyno tuned and leave my car alone for a while. my car is fine and there is increased power but i must keep 92 or above in her to be safe. but i dont want to leave anything to chance. after i put on the mods u see below. im getting it tuned so that i will know exactly where my A/F is. but to stay on the safe side when messing with the maf before u get tuned put premium in to be safe.

RE: Mass air leaning
the stock air meter "expects" the screen to be there. the screen is designed to straighten out airflow so the sensor can more accurately estimate the volume of air coming in. If you remove the screen, more air will come in than what the sensor thinks - causing a lean condition. aftermarket meters are not calibrated with a screen, so therefore that will not be of a concern.
