Does anyone know how to tell how many miles may be on an engine? Im going to purchase an engine that SUPPOSEDLY has 4,000 miles. ADVICE?????

Thats damn near impossible. Is it a reputable Co., do they have any kind of verification, paper work, etc. Just doing a visual really tells you nothing because their so easy to clean up. You may get a better idea if it can be tested but even that isn't spot on so I wish you luck.

see if the VIN is stamped on the block, then carfax that VIN and see what you find

Without opening it up, it'd be impossible. The easiest would be to remove the pan and look at the crank and rod bearings. You'll also be able to see up into the cylinder walls. Also, pull off a valve cover and look for wear marks on the cam (should be none).
