Default Accidental Redlining

I have a 2001 Saleen with about 21,000 miles on it and, let's face it, it's fun to accelerate rapidly. I don't pay a lot of attention to the tachometer and a couple of times, I accelerated so quickly while still in second that the engine just sort of lost power until I shifted into third. I'm pretty sure I redlined it. Someone told me that the car has a device on it to prevent engine damage in that situation by causing the engine to fire alternate cylinders.

My husband and son both say they've never heard of that (so it must not be so, right? ) I'm sure you can tell, I don't know much about this. Any ideas or comments? I've been good since it happened the second time -- I love my car and I don't want to hurt it! Thanks!!

Have you felt the car "bucking"? That is the rev limiter kicking in and is there to prevent engine damage. There is NO guarantee against it, so be sure to watch the tach! You can get tach gagues that will be within the line of sight...that might be a good thing for you to get.

You are absolutely correct Mrs. Longhorn. It is the rev protector, don't worry about it!

Yep that engines good for 1000+ rpm over what the redline is (not including valve float though)

It would take a hell of alot of abuse to damage the car by over reving. I dont think a few seconds at the rev limiter is going to do any damage, thats what it is there for.

Unless you hold it banging off the rev limiter I dont think you have to worry, but it cant be a good thing anyway. If your bouncing off the limter you arn't shifting at the right time which means your going slow
