couple of basic questions
Is engine rpm always at a constant ratio to wheel rpm for a given gear?
Is engine HP a constant times the torque and engine rpm?
Thanks. I am trying to understand how changing gear affects rpm as the hp remains the same at each engine rpm. Any help appreciated.

RE: couple of basic questions
To the first question I think is yes. Its pretty simple, gears dont make more hp or torque than what you already have. They just make it quicker for the engine to use the hp and torque. They just make your rpms higher for every wheel turn. Say at 5 mph in 1st gear your engine is at 500rpms. With a higher gear ratio, you might be doing 5mph in 1st gear at 700rpms. All the gears do is let you access your power quicker by kinda letting you get a jumpstart on your powerband.

RE: couple of basic questions
thanks. power should be torque times the angular velocity, i.e. rpm. so it seems like with a higher gear, say 4.1, you accelerate faster due to higher torque--right? That would mean you increase engine rpm. Also, because of 4.1:1 ratio, engine should rev more. Both of these increases rpm.
Now, hp increases with rpm. ok?
but, torque is always going to be a constant factor more than torque would be with stock gears (3.27).
man .. it's not simple .. rather complicated.
What happens, when you press gas staying at one gear? Do torque, rpm and hence hp all increase?

RE: couple of basic questions
gears make your driveshaft turn quicker. that means go throught the gears quicker and access your power quicker. don't nuke it bro. good luck. 3:73=better gas mileage than 4:10 at a constant rpm but 4:10 will get you there quicker.
