Heads on a 5.4 and a 4.6 are interchangeable. Be careful buying heads off ebay I got burned bad on a set. I bought then for like $250 suppose to have worked fine. A year later when I went to put them on the car the cam journals were spun.

Heres a thread from earlier that talked about that. From what they say they are PI heads and are the same on the 4.6 and 5.4

Sorry for being ignorant but what are cam journals. And what can you do if that happens to you?

Cam journals are the hmm not sure how to say it but the slot the cams sit in and then a cap is bolted down on top of them. There needs to be oil between the cam and the journal otherwise you have metal on metal. I think that the person starved the engine of oil. Either way I'm not saying you can find a good set of heads just sharing a bad experience.

I don't think like the way the question was answered in the previous thread, it was kinda confusing. Yes the 4.6 and 5.4 heads are the same. If you buy 5.4 heads you will not need anything different to put them on your mustang then what you would need with a 4.6 heads . You are going to need to buy a 4.6 pi intake(along with other things) but you would have to do that with 4.6 heads anyways. The adaptor plate they were talking about is if you were to put a 5.4 engine in your car and you didn't want to use the truck manifold. Which if your just swaping heads has nothing to do with you.

There is more things that you'll need to do a pi swap then just the heads though. You will need a pi intake. You'll have to do something with the coolant line that runs out of the back of the water pump and into the heater core. You'll need valve covers. HMMMM I'm trying to remember what else. Oh you'll need a head change kit. The head bolts on a 4.6 are torque to yield(one time use)and you always want to put new gaskets in while you're there. I think it was mph that has a head change kit for like $100 or something a good deal.
