Default Launching techniques

Well after talking to MD for awile this morning I went out and played a little in the GT.

The first thing I tried was a clutch pop at about 3200 RPM. As I had predicted this resulted in a boatload of wheelhop and massive tirespin, which of course led to a major bog in 2nd gear as I shifted

Next, I tried a not quite so agressive clutch action while taching at about 2800 RPM. This resulted in about a 2 second wheelspin (with wheelhop) and then a **** and get

Last, I tried to not spin the tires (at least not outright spin em) with feathering the clutch and pedal work. This was about the same, at least it felt like it.

I guess I am going to have to get to the track and try a couple different methods, and then from my slips see which was faster. I can't tell the difference between the 2nd and 3rd launch speed wise.

BTW MD, is that what the control arms did for you?? Eliminate wheelhop? The tires sound like "ert ert ert ert". Well kinda....

Yes, they definetly make suspension parts to help you eliminate the wheel hop. Just keep practicing, and you'll get the feel for your car. Just be ready to buy a new clutch sometime in the near future.

what I do is rev to about 2 grand and bring the clutch to the point just before it grabs and when I see the third yellow light hit I roll off of it... never pop it. I, most of the time, never get wheel spin and never have had any wheel hop. Now its all different if I have to drive through that nasty water box. It sucks @$$!

What was your tire pressure 200GT, and did you heat the tires before you launched? I can tell you that unless you do a burnout until the tires start smoking its not gonna grab near as well as it should. See Nitto's make their dr's to last, so they trade cold tire grip for life - but when you heat em up it softens the compound and grips like a ****. Most people think BFG's hook alot better than the Nitto's - but thats only because the BFG's don't need to be heated like the Nittos - but the Nitto's last twice as long. Good trade-off IMO.

***edit*** on a similar note - When I dropped my tire pressure from 30 lbs to 22 lbs I went from a 13.7 to a 13.5 with my 60's dropping from 2.05 to 1.95, when I dropped to 18 lbs my 60's dropped to 1.90's flat, but no magic 1.8x # yet.

yeah nittos sound better. i would rather have regular tire grip for everyday driving and heat them up when its time to get some traction.

I think I am running 24 or so PSI in the tires. I am confused, I thought you wernt supposed to heat em unless they were slicks?? I musta misread that thread.

I didnt heat em up, but I did do a fair amount (10 miles?) of driving first.

I will definatly heat em up before I run at wentsville. BTW is that what the control arms did mainly?? Eliminate any wheelhop???

My BFGs hook alot better when I do a burn out, even though they say you dont need to, I go to a track where they pick up alot of dirt and rocks and maybe they just need cleaned off. Also our track has a relatively poor surface and my best 60 foot is 2.0.

You will definately get better times by droppin the pressure to 18 lbs and doing a big enough burn-out to at least see smoke coming from your back tires. I can't get em smoking very fast unless I do the burnout in 2nd gear. Just dump it and get the smoke coming and roll the burnout out of the box after the smoke starts. Sure 10 miles of driving is gonna help them hook better than at first, but once you get a smokey burnout and lower pressure you will see what hookin on Nitto's really feels like

Oh and the control arms do make the wheel-hop go bye bye, but thats just a bi-product from them planting the tires better because they don't flex like the stockers do. The lowers account for most all of the improved straight line traction, the uppers help more in corners - but still help a tad bit straight line.
