a couple BRAKE questions

a couple BRAKE questions
After I change my brakepads, how long can I put off turning/refinishing my rotors?
Also, my emergency brake light comes on sometimes when it rains. Is this because the pads are worn or is there another reason?

RE: a couple BRAKE questions
The only way to tell is be taking a digital mickrometer or something to measure the depth and check with stock depth which im not sure of usually you dont need to turn it if your just putting the second set of pads on. But it all depends on miles and how far you wore the pads down and if there are any grooves in them etc. To me its just easier to get new rotors. Your emergency light could be coming on because the contact when you put the brake lever down may not be making contact my bros stang does this when he accelrates sometimes and that is what is causing the prob. Brake light won't come on to tell your pads are low thats what the screechers are for on the pads. It will only come on for electronic reasons.

thanks man. I'll have to inspect the rotors thoroughly to see if need some work on them. What should I look for besides grooves? Any color changing like a blue haze forming?

overall anything out of the ordinary other than a smooth metal surface and you should always use brake parts cleaner on the sides of the rotors if you usuing exsisting ones to clean them off before the new pads. I honestly changed my pads with the hawks from stock on the front the rotors looked fine no grooves or indents etc car has 47K on it they work fine. You can also check to see the wear comparision from eachside of the rotor. If there is more wear on one side than the other the calipers should probably be inspected lubed or replaced just to add to the info.

I don't know about color... but if you've got some spare change layin around you might as well change the rotors... If you decide not to, just make sure the ones you have on there aren't wearing too unevenly...

RE: a couple BRAKE questions
Yeah I know how you feel Last week I changed all the pads, left the front rotors alone, and replaced the back rotors cause they were grooved pretty bad. Its always about the money though...
