Default Oil Changing Questions

Just a couple of oil change questions : (2k3 Mustang GT w/Manual trans)

1). There is a port by the oil filter that can be unscrewed, will this drain the oil out of the filter?
2). As stupid as it sounds, do people actually fill the filter before screwing it on, if so, why?
3). Ford calls for 6.02 quarts, I assumed the .02 would be left in the motor since it doesn't drain 100%, so I use 6qt's of Mobil 1, and I good to go with this?

Thanks in advance.

I doubt that any oil can be drained from the filter by unscrewing a bolt that's not attached to the filter. How would it drain the oil the way the filter sits? Not sure as to how many quarts it holds... add five then check the level. If it needs more then add it. Great choice of oil though.... all you need now is a motor craft oil filter.

My 03 just takes 5 qts and its good. No people dont fill the filter, and no I dont think you can drain it from the filter before. Just get up under your car(I use a jack for the front) and get dirty, plus its fun Also, good choice with the oil. I always use Mobile 1 oil and filter and my stuff runs great.

The filter sits like this / so when I start to unscrew it, I always get my power steering lines and rack covered in oil, somewhat annoying, nothing major, I just thought if I could drain the oil from the filter before removing it, it would be easier.

Thanks for the responses.

make sure the engine is slightly warmed up before you change it. This increases the viscosity? of the oil and helps all the sludge flow out. And wet the new oil filter seal with oil.

people fill the filter with oil so they don't have a unlubed motor the first time they start it after an oil change. my motor takes 5 quarts as well, I have no clue why it' snot what furd says.

whatever you do, don't overfill the motor, cause I think you have to get underneath to drain any extra oil out. start low and add until you have enough.

Many people fill their oil filter(me included)before installing it ,so the engine will not have a dry start, after the oil change...also put a bit of oil on the rubber gasket. My 06 4.6 takes 6 liters of oil at oil changes
