I have 4.10 and I hate that I have to drive around in 4th or 5th gear. The average speed I drive around town is 40mph. I am kinda stuck, because 4th is a little higher in the rpm band than I want and 5th is a little too low for me. I think 4th is above 3000rpm and 5th at like 1800rpm at that speed. What do you guys drive around town in. I have been driving around in 4th and getting 15mpg. Just curious how you guys drive. Plus what kind of mpg do you get?

I don't have 4.10s but you should be able to swing 5th gear at 40 MPH... with my stock gearing, 40 MPH in 5th gear is ~1050-1100 RPM, 35 is closer to idle... provided you're not going up a hill and just cruising... or otherwise leaving NO load on the engine, you shouldn't be bogging it down. If possible, I'll get to 40-42 in a 35 and go with 5th gear... as soon as I need to accelerate though I go to 4th, or even 3rd.

1500 RPM is the cruising RPM, that's an engine speed it was designed to be at... that's what your mileage rating is, 55 MPH @ 1500 RPM. Lower is ok as long as you're not bogging it down... like I said, if I'm in 5th and way low, and I need to accelerate AT ALL I downshift... sometimes my speed will fall below 40 and I'll need to downshift to get it back up... again you -can- cruise that low, but you need to be careful not to bog it down for a long period.

I'm not sure on my mileage, I haven't been light on my stang lately... but no wonder you're getting horrid mileage at anything above 1500 RPM [8D] or even 2000 RPM

With 4.30's I could cruise out in 5th gear around 30-35mph.

i dont have 4.10s but i do have 3:73s and i cruse in 3rd at 40 at 2,300 - 2,500 and get 16-18mpg and cruse 80 at 2,500rpm

hell, BEFORE my 4.10's i cruised around in 5th ALL the time..

cities speed limit is usually 35, make it 5th gear for me

county speed limit is 55, i do 45.. make it 5th gear

now with my 4.10's, i cruise in 5th gear even more than before

as for 3K in 4th at 40... thats not right...

As for the 3k at 40mph in 4th. Thats just a guess I cant really remember what the exact rpm is. But its pretty high up there. I need a 6 speed!
