supercharger questions, compression, gauges etc
Well next year I'm planning to build a motor and top it off with probably a vortech supercharger. I am pretty wise (not an expert of course) with N/A cars, but I am new to the boosted world.
I have some questions to think about now. I'm looking to get about 450-500 rwhp, and have it be reliable (hence building the motor, I'm goin forged). Is this horsepower feasible with pump gas? IE 92 or 93 octane premium?
If so, what compression ratio would be good? How much boost should I run? I was thinking about getting dished pistons and running around 15 psi, would this make sense with my goals?
Also, someone give me some insight to the 'intercooler' and 'aftercooler' setups that can be run with a blower. Wondering what their benefits are and how difficult they are to add.
How about buying a used blower? Is this wise, is there anything I should look out for? I've seen them for sale cheap before with 10,000 miles or less on them (blew the motor or something)
On to gauges... what gauges would be good for a supercharged car? I have the stock ones (of course) plus an aftermarket oil pressure and air/fuel gauge. I was thinking about getting the gauge cluster overlay that goes over the stock gauges and adds two more gauges, and getting boost and exhaust temperature...this good, bad, what else should I do?
Edit: Just had another thought... would it be a good idea to look into a slightly larger radiator to keep this engine cool? thanks
Any input let me know. I'm starting to take notes on how to plan this entire build so I do it right the first time around
Thanks all!
George

RE: supercharger questions, compression, gauges etc
i bought my blower used with 7k miles on it with no problems... just depends on how its treated.... the only thing i have had go is the motor cause its not meant for the power i have.
i would have fuel pressure... possibly boost/vaccum.... oil pressure is another good one... air/fuel does nothing really but a light show.
